Save Time and Money on Groceries With These Simple Meal Planning Tips + FREE PRINTABLE PLANNER

The endless task of meal planning for a family can be daunting – let me help make this chore a little more manageable. I am sharing my personal weekly meal planner with you here, for free!

Hey there, friends! It’s Lauren with Rustic Honey, and today we’re diving into one of my favorite topics — simple meal planning that actually saves you time and money. I know meal planning can sound like a chore, but when you keep it simple and intentional, it can change the way your week — and your grocery bill — looks.

First Step: What We Have

Before I even start planning meals, I like to clean out the refrigerator and take inventory. It’s amazing how many ingredients hide behind those jars and leftovers. My first tip is simple: start with what you already have. Before heading to the store, look through your fridge, pantry, and freezer. You’d be surprised how many meals can come together just by using up what’s already there. It saves money, cuts down on waste, and helps you feel more organized in your kitchen.

Go To Recipe Idea When Meal Planning

One of our favorite “use what we have” dinners is a taco rice bowl — ground beef, beans, corn, leftover veggies, and salsa. It’s hearty, quick, and perfect for busy nights when we’re running between football practices and chores. I’ll often double the recipe and freeze the extra, which brings me to my next tip: eat your leftovers (or better yet, reinvent them!). A batch of taco rice can become stuffed peppers later in the week or even a freezer meal for another night.

Batch Cooking for the Freezer

Speaking of the freezer — it’s your best friend when it comes to meal planning. Whenever I’m cooking something that takes a bit of time, like lasagna or casserole, I go ahead and make two. One for dinner tonight and one for the freezer. Those freezer meals have saved me on more nights than I can count when I didn’t have the time (or energy!) to cook.

Needs and Wants When Meal Planning

Another tip that has completely changed the way I shop is planning your grocery trip ahead of time. I like to keep a list of “needs” and “wants.” The needs are the essentials — milk, produce, bread — and the wants are those extra little luxuries. When I stay mindful of what’s in my cart, I not only stay on budget but can even stock up on bulk items when I come in under.

And if you’re looking to stretch your dollar further, learn to cook from scratch when you can. It doesn’t have to be complicated! Start small by replacing one convenience item with a homemade version. You’ll be amazed how simple and satisfying it can be.

Create a Recipe Trove

Lastly, keep a running list of 15–20 go-to meals your family loves. Rotate them by season to keep things interesting. When you know those meals by heart, dinner becomes effortless — and your grocery list practically makes itself.

Meal planning doesn’t have to be fancy. Start small, use what you have, and give yourself grace. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s to save your time, energy, and hard-earned money… and maybe enjoy dinner just a little bit more.

FREE PRINTABLE PLANNER

This is an easy printable planner that I use myself to make weekly meal planning a breeze!

The most important part of this planner system is to evaluate what you have – and what needs to be used up in the fridge and pantry. This helps to decrease waste and save money! BONUS: it provides you with a jumping off point of what recipes to use!

Another one of my favorite spaces on this free printable is: wants. Most weekly meal planning systems only include spaces to plan each meal and what ingredients you will need to make this happen. My planner makes sure to include realistic parts that make our family run.

Thanks for stopping by and happy planning!
