I love oatmeal for breakfast! It always sounds delicious and I rarely get burnt out on it.
You know those convenient little packs of oatmeal? Well, I have made my own! And they are much healthier than those processed little pouches. I make a whole bunch at once and they are so easy to keep on hand.
When I set out to make my own oatmeal packs, I though hard about the ingredients to include. I wanted to make them as hearty and healthy as possible without the finished product tasting like cardboard!
Here are the ingredients I chose. You could play around with any of your favorite flavors!
- Steel Cut Oats (Quick 3-minute)
- Flax Chai Seed Meal Blend
- Brown Sugar
- Salt
- Cinnamon
- Optional: Walnuts
I use sandwich bags as my packets and throw everything in, mix it up, seal and store! When you are ready to cook, you just add the amount of water or milk per oatmeal instructions and microwave! Super easy! I can throw packets together for the whole week while making a bowl in the microwave. It is that fast! *The oats say three minutes but my microwave gets it done in two! I’ll take that extra minute anytime I can get it! 😉
An extra minute to eat breakfast with this little guy… on my lap! 🙂
If you want the packets to be very similar the convenience packs, make these with a more quick cooking oat, instead of steel cut. You’ll still be cutting out all the additives found in those packs! You know they add artificial flavors and colors to those? I didn’t until I started reading the ingredient list!
One last note, don’t be discouraged on the price. It will seem expensive when you go to buy the oats and flax/chai blend but you will get way more than 10 servings out of your DIY packets! If you are worried about saving money on them, omit the walnuts! The ingredients you buy for this are pricey upfront but will go a long way for your dollar and your health!
- 1/3 c. Quick 3-Minute Steel Cut Oats (serving size portion on label)
- 2 T Flax Chia Seed Meal Blend (serving size portion on label)
- 1 T Brown Sugar (more or less depending on preference)
- Dash of Salt
- Dash or two of Cinnamon
- Optional: Walnut pieces
- Place all dry ingredients together in a sandwich bag.
- Mix together and seal in the bag.
- To make, add water and cook according to oatmeal directions.
- Add a splash of milk, and top with fruit for a hearty and healthy breakfast!
I think you’ll be surprised too! These DIY convenient packets are the best alternative! I love them!
Do you makeover any convenience foods in your home?

P.S. If you are anything like me, you are bound to come home from the grocery store with the wrong oats! ARG! I accidentally bought the regular steel cut instead of the Quick 3-minute kind.
To make those more convenient, I just make about 5-6 servings at a time on the stovetop, throw them into small serving size containers, and heat them up in the morning with a splash a milk or water. I just toss in all the other ingredients on top and mix them in after microwaving but you could mix them in while cooking beforehand to save even more time! Experiment and do what works best for you!
The texture is slightly different but I love it too! Delicious either way!
Okay, this post if over now! 🙂
[…] like we had an abundance of oatmeal (because I was obsessed with this breakfast)Â and formula containers lately so I felt I need to do something to recycle […]
