Cheesy Sausage Breakfast Loaf Video:
Ingredients you will need:
- 1 large french loaf (or any large artisan bread loaf)
- 1 lb. ground breakfast sausage
- 1 block cream cheese (8oz)
- 8-10 slices of deli ham
- 1 cup of mozzarella, shredded
How To Make Sausage & Cheese Breakfast Loaf:
- Cook the sausage and drain: In a medium skillet over medium/high heat add your fresh ground breakfast sausage and begin to brown. Use a spatula to break the sausage up as it cooks into crumbles of savory goodness. Drain the excess grease from the sausage.
- Add the cream cheese to melt: Once the meat is fully cooked and drained, add in the block of cream cheese. (You may choose low fat or full fat options here depending on your preferences.) Melt the cream cheese into the sausage over low heat to create a creamy mixture for the loaf filling.
- Cut your bread loaf open to fill: Cut your bread loaf lengthwise down one side of the bread with a serrated bread knife. I like to leave the halves attached on one side (so it opens like a hotdog bun). TIP: I’ll often pickup these large loafs on sale at my local Walmart. They are inexpensive and can be tossed in the freezer until you’re ready to use them!
- Fill the bread: Place your bread onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (can also use foil). Spread the sausage and cheese mixture evenly onto the bottom half of the bread loaf.
- Top it off: For this sausage breakfast loaf I like to add thinly sliced ham and freshly grated cheese on top (I used mozzarella here because I always have some on hand but provolone or Swiss would great options too.)
- Toast it and serve: Place this breakfast loaf into a 350 degree oven for 10-12 minutes or until bread is toasty and cheese is melty. Slice into individual sandwiches and serve warm. Complete the meal with a side of scrambled eggs or fruit salad.
Please don’t judge my horribly dirty oven!
How to make-head, store and freeze sausage breakfast loaf:
- Make-Ahead: I’ve made this breakfast loaf ahead of time in the past and simply wrapped it in foil to bake at a later time. Since the filling is fully cooked, you’ll simply need to toss it into the oven until heated through. Note: The baking time will be much longer, allow 30-45 minutes at 350 degrees to heat through (may vary by oven of course).
- Storage: I like to cut the leftovers into individual sandwiches and store in the fridge (could also freeze individually!). As you’re ready to eat them, you may microwave in a pinch but I’d recommend reheating these in the oven or air fryer to maintain that yummy crusty bread texture. I also recommend laying them on parchment paper while reheating for easy cleanup and no burnt-on cheese disasters.
- Freezing: You could also freeze this breakfast bread loaf! I’d personally cut it in half, wrap each piece tightly with foil and then place inside of a freezer bag for secure storage. Freeze for up to 3-4 months. When ready to bake/heat simply pull the foil-wrapped breads out of your freezer bag and allow them to thaw before baking. See note above under “make-ahead” regarding longer baking times.
Well now you know how to make and store sausage breakfast loaf but I’m here to tell you there probably won’t be any leftovers unless you double this recipe!
This is such a treat and your family is sure to dive in!
